The Webb School seeks an enthusiastic and experienced day/boarding school educator to be its next Dean of Students. The Dean of Students reports directly to the Head of School. The Dean will work closely with the Dean of Residential Life, and they share an Administrative Assistant. He or she is in charge of the school’s discipline, calendars, and much of student non-academic programming. The Dean, working with the Dean of Residential Life, will help develop a “second curriculum” for all students which will complement our “Fostering Student Initiative” program for our boarding students. This position requires skills in managing multiple tasks, from mundane to creative.

The Dean will serve as a catalyst to all the students, international and domestic, and faculty who will mix freely forming a community that celebrates diversity in the School.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A. degree or equivalent, Masters preferred.
  • Direct experience with the culture of an independent day/boarding school.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, decision-making and supervisory skills.

Director of College Counseling

Director of College Counseling

The Webb School is seeking a charismatic, energetic, and flexible individual to fill the position of Director of College Counseling. This position will start on or around July 1, 2018. The Director of College Counseling is one of two college counselors at The Webb School, and will report directly to the Head of School. This is an opportunity to direct a strong, established program with good support from the school community and reasonable college admission expectations.

Founded in 1870, Webb is an independent, college preparatory, non-sectarian, coeducational boarding and day school that enrolls 320 students in grades 6 -12. Recent and upcoming senior classes range from 48 to 68, and the college counseling office includes the Director and the Assistant Director, who will continue in her current role. Webb seniors apply to colleges and universities that reflect the broad range of students served by the school, including 16% international students representing 17 nations, domestic boarding students from a dozen southeastern states, and day students from throughout southern Middle Tennessee.

The Honor Code and Honor Council traditions date to the founding of The Webb School, as do the rigorous academic curriculum, public speaking and arts programs, and athletic and outdoor opportunities. Bell Buckle, a charming, quaint, and rural town of 500 residents, is half an hour from rapidly growing Murfreesboro, home to Middle Tennessee State University, and an hour from Nashville. Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of college admissions or college counseling experience is required. Presentation, leadership, program planning skills are preferred.

The Office of College Counseling at The Webb School assists students in researching, applying to, and gaining admission to appropriate post-secondary institutions around the country and around the world. The Director of College Counseling will have the following specific responsibilities:

  • Oversee Webb’s college admissions process, which includes advising students and families about applying to college, obtaining teacher recommendations, writing personal statements, and applying for financial aid.
  • Directly supervise an Assistant Director of College Counseling and co-supervise a part-time College Counseling Administrative Assistant.
  • Directly counsel and advise approximately 25-30 senior students, including the writing of a counselor letter of recommendation for each. Additionally, the Director will counsel and advise the same number of students in each grade of the Upper School on all college-related matters.
  • Plan and conduct college counseling-related seminars, group discussions, and other informational events for students and families.
  • Plan and execute various college-related events throughout the year for the benefit of the Webb community, including the Junior College Day, a spring college fair, and a young alumni panel.
  • Along with the Assistant Director, lead a twice-weekly College Counseling class for members of the senior class each fall.
  • Meet and establish ongoing professional relationships with approximately 40-50 visiting college admissions representatives every year.
  • Represent Webb at various professional development meetings regionally and nationally.
  • Attend counselor visitation events on college campuses (subject to time and budget availability).
  • Update the annual School Profile for distribution to colleges.
  • Oversee the teacher recommendation process, including educating faculty about recommendation writing techniques.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians in the Webb community about important college-related information.
  • Prepare informational reports about the Office of College Counseling for submission to the Board of Trustees.
  • Attend weekly Administrative Council meetings and regular Academic Council meetings.
  • Serve as the school’s AP Coordinator, including overseeing test registration, billing, and proctoring.
  • Publicize and manage the Governor’s School, Boys’ State, and Girls’ State application processes.
  • Oversee the budget of the College Counseling Office.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree (with a master’s degree preferred) and at least five years of relevant college counseling or college admissions experience. Knowledge and understanding of the culture of independent high schools is strongly preferred. Applicants should be effective and engaging speakers, strong writers, organized program planners with leadership and management skills, and should enjoy working with both students and parents. Travel to occasional conferences and individual college visits will be required; counselors often travel during weekends, and must be willing and able to do so.

The Science Department is in the midst of changing the science curricular sequence; therefore, this position will require one section of Physics, one section of AP Physics I, and one section of AP Physics C, as well as one or two regular sections of Chemistry for the 2018-2019 school year. Beyond the 2018-2019 school year, this position will most likely comprise of all physics sections.

A full-time position for teaching faculty at The Webb School includes the following requirements:
