The Webb School is delighted to announce the appointment of Bill McClain as its new Executive Director of Athletics, effective July 1, 2026. While searching for the perfect next candidate to lead Webb Athletics, the hiring committee sought an individual with not only a passion for sports or a background in coaching but also with the skills to design and lead highly effective departments, cultivate strong, accountable teams, communicate with clarity, and align the department with the School’s mission and long-term vision.
Bill, who holds an M.S. from Texas Christian University and a B.A. from Southwestern University, brings to the Feet a rare combination of independent school leadership, operational excellence in the corporate sector, and a deep passion for the Webb Athletics program. His unique background includes 15 years as an administrator at St. George’s Independent School in Collierville, Tenn., and six years spearheading operations for Indigo Ag in the corporate world. Bill, a former Klingenstein Fellow, prides himself on leading with an emphasis on building teams, professionalism, and consistency.
His primary responsibility in his new role as Executive Director of Athletics will be overseeing the development of both people and programs at The Webb School, ensuring that Webb’s coaches and student-athletes are supported, challenged and held to the highest standards. Under Bill's leadership, the School looks forward to evaluating and elevating the Athletics Department, its coaching staff, and offerings, and collaborating with the academic, arts, student life, and admissions offices to develop leaders, scholars, teammates and young people of integrity.
“We recognize that families evaluate athletic programs not only by competitive success, but also by communication, alignment with values and the overall student experience,” said Dr. Polly Parker, Head of School. “Bill has a demonstrated ability to establish operational clarity, develop and execute strategy, and measure outcomes. Equally important, he possesses strong communication skills, a commitment to collaboration, and the ability to build a cohesive, values-driven culture.”
Bill – the proud parent of two collegiate student-athletes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Juniata College, as well as two dedicated Middle School athletes – brings professional expertise and personal insight to supporting athletes who aspire to compete at the next level. In addition to being a four-sport student-athlete in high school, Bill is an experienced basketball coach. We are eager to see the impact he will have on developing programs and supporting student-athletes in meaningful, lasting ways.
“I am deeply honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve as The Webb School's Executive Director of Athletics. Webb's commitment to developing young men and women of character has inspired generations, and I am grateful for the trust the Board and Dr. Parker have placed in me,” said Bill.
“My primary goal is simple: to clear the path for our outstanding coaches so they can do what they do best—build meaningful relationships with athletes and help them grow as leaders on the field, in the classroom, and throughout their lives. I'm excited to hear the hopes, ideas, and aspirations of our students, coaches, parents, alumni, and the entire Webb community. Together, we'll build on Webb's rich tradition of developing character and discipline because, at the end of the day, our charge is not just to prepare students for the next game; it's to prepare them for the next chapter of their lives.”
Please join us in welcoming Bill to the Webb community.
