Recap of Alumni Reunion 2024
Dave Trout

Over 150 alumni, faculty/staff, and former faculty gathered on Webb's campus in late October for the 2024 Alumni Reunion.  Participants represented the Class of 1955 all the way through the Class of 2024.  The largest class representation was the Class of 1974, which was this year's golden guard - celebrating their 50th class reunion.

Day one of reunion included a chance for alumni to attend Friday classes with Webb students on any subject they choose.  Bond Library was filled with a lively all-alumni social, which included appetizers, drinks, games, conversation, and an appearance by The Foot mascot.  This reunion gathering begins a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Foot.

A pop-up Webb spirit store was available both days, with several tees, hats, tumblers, sweatshirts, and other swag available for purchase.  Callie Enea '12 curated the merchandise selections - with most items available for the first time.

Day two of the reunion offered an opportunity to observe clay target shooting at Patterson Clay Target Complex.  Author Erica Wright '99 shared a book club conversation about her 2024 novel Hollow Bones.  Several alumni enjoyed tours of campus, including a first-hand look at some of Webb's 2024 campus improvements.  Susan Howell and Hannah Byrd Little hosted a glimpse into the Webb Archives.  A gathering of alumni also had a "30 Years of Lacrosse" reunion celebration.

The centerpiece of the entire reunion was the Endless Mimosa Brunch and Award Ceremony, which took place in Haun-Ragland Gym.  Head of School Ken Cheeseman shared these remarks to attendees: "As the weekend unfolds, I hope it is filled with nostalgia, laughter, and reconnection with treasured friends as you reminisce about your time as a student at Webb. It's an exciting time for The Webb School... It has been the strongest start to a school year in my five years as Head of School."

Gilbert Gordon '76 was presented the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Society Award.  In his acceptance, he shared, "When Libby Willis '80 (Alumni Board President) called and gave me the news of this honor, she mentioned the word 'distinguished,' and I just couldn't make the connection. The earliest reference I had to that word was in the mid-1970s when on Alumni Day, a host of gray-haired men appeared on campus. They carried themselves with a measure of pride, having returned to the place that made them who they were. They were distinguished, and I held them in high esteem.  They possessed differing measures of wisdom and success, but these distinguished men were alike in one distinct way: they were very old.  Hence my confusion at receiving this distinction, since I do not consider myself wise, successful, or old. If there is anything distinguished in me, it was from rubbing close enough to those who shared their character and personality in small ways - like my best friends from Webb."

Michael Quinn was presented the 2024 John B. Hardin Service Award.  In his acceptance, he shared, "Perhaps my standing here is part of an effort to recognize and appreciate Webb teachers as a whole. That way of thinking allows me accept this recognition on their behalf. It's crucial for Webb teachers to be able to responsibly educate our students and to be able to do so without the fear of losing their job....  I am deeply moved by this award, and I share this honor with my colleagues - all of you past and present."
