In their first year, students will learn foundational outdoor skills, ranging from basic risk awareness, navigation and shelter to campcraft, gear use and outdoor safety principles. They will also study "Leave No Trace" ethics and environmental responsibility while developing teamwork, communication and decision-making skills.

Along with earning CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications, sophomores will gain advanced outdoor skills, plan trips, assist with supervised outdoor experiences, study environmental hazards, weather assessment and risk mitigation, and learn ethical leadership and accountability in group settings. 

Equipped with the skills needed to design detailed outdoor itineraries, including logistics, safety plans, and environmental impact assessments, juniors will lead their peers through extended outdoor experiences, mentor younger W.I.L.D. students, and practice leadership in dynamic, unpredictable environments. Wilderness First Aid certification (or an equivalent, such as Wilderness First Responder awareness modules) is also required at this stage of the Program. 

Applying all learned leadership skills, seniors will initiate and execute a Capstone that includes designing, planning, and leading a wilderness expedition over three days or longer. The project will require a detailed safety and risk-management plan and coordination of group leadership, logistics, and environmental stewardship.
