The Hub for Research and Study at Webb
The Library is the heart of the Webb experience, providing a space where students can be themselves—whether studying, researching, debating, connecting with friends, or enjoying a book in comfort. The librarian and staff go the extra mile to foster a sense of belonging, collaborating with faculty to plan and teach, and welcoming alumni and all members of the Webb community. It’s a hub of learning, connection, and growth for everyone.
The library strives to create a true “third place,” where students feel a sense of belonging and community—a place beyond home and the classroom where they can gather, connect, and thrive.

A place for students to propel their research
We aim to ensure that every student graduates with the skills and confidence to perform college-level research, and ideally, with a sense of joy in the discovery process. Inspired by Seth Godin’s “library of the future” blog post, we take full responsibility for preparing students to be “first-rate data sharks,” equipping them with the critical thinking and research skills they’ll need to navigate an information-rich world. These goals not only support academic achievement but also nurture lifelong learning and curiosity.
McDonnell-Follin Scholars Program
The McDonnell-Follin Scholars Program supports the in-depth study of an academic area by a student in the junior class for one semester while being supported by a member of the faculty or administration. It is a student-driven program wherein the student will create the course of study in consultation with the proposed mentor.
The mentor and student will meet one or two times per week to check on the progress and development of new ideas. At the end of the semester the student will present their work to the Upper School in a chapel who will then ask questions of the student about his/her research.
A Place that Honors Tradition and Innovation
The William Bond Library at The Webb School of Bell Buckle is a transformative space that honors tradition while embracing innovation. Situated to complete the school’s iconic quad, the library was made possible by a visionary donor, a Webb graduate and renowned architect who designed the original Holiday Inn Motels. Dedicated to his father, a member of the class of 1903, the library reflects a shared commitment to creating a signature design that is both impactful and meaningful.
Balancing tradition with modern needs, the library features abundant natural light, a welcoming fireplace, flexible spaces for individual and collaborative learning, and stunning campus views—all shaped through a collaborative process with students and faculty.
"This remarkable building is a cornerstone of campus life, inspiring connection, discovery, and a deep sense of place."

A Place Where Our History is Preserved
In April 2012, the Board of Trustees approved the attachment of The Webb School Archives to the Library Department, marking a significant step toward preserving the school’s rich history. At the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, Susan Coop Howell was appointed as the school’s first archivist. She embraced the role with dedication, pursuing specialized training in a three-year program through the Tennessee Archives Institute and becoming a Certified Archives Manager in 2018. Her leadership and expertise have been instrumental in building a professionally managed repository that safeguards The Webb School’s legacy for future generations.
