Winter break for 13 Webb students meant enjoying a five-day Santa Fe River canoe trip.
The five-day canoe trip took the group down the Santa Fe River near High Springs, Fla. Included along the way are crystal-clear springs such as Ginnie, Lily, Poe, and Rum Island located at the banks of the river and made for excellent swimming and snorkeling. Students and leaders also spent time in Ichetucknee Springs State Park, where the water is crystal-clear and 72°F year-round.
The area is sparsely populated compared to the rest of Florida. There have been sightings of animals like the black bear, bobcat, the rare Florida panther and, due to the near-constant water temperatures along many portions of the river, manatees.
The trip was led by Joe Griggs ’05, Wilderness Instruction and Leadership Development (WILD) director, and Brian Wofford, retired director of the outdoor program, as well as school nurses, Risa Brown and Kathryn Coleman.
