Webb campus, buildings receive updates to enhance the student experience
Christopher Enea
During their April board meeting, The Webb School Board of Trustees approved $3 million of updates to our campus focused on unifying the campus design and improving the living facilities for boarding students. In line with The Webb School's 2022 Strategic Plan and its goals to promote sustainability across all aspects of the community, create an outstanding student experience, and support a community of 150 residential students, a series of campus updates are being completed ahead of our 155th academic year.
Lori Sain Smith, Interior Designer with Daffodilly Design, assisted Webb with project design, implementation, and management. Smith emphasized key themes in her design plan: using color psychology to create optimal living and learning environments, honoring classic design reflecting Webb's rich history, and choosing sustainable and health-conscious products.
Speaking on the impact of these changes, Smith said, "We're designing the best environment for students to learn and grow, surrounding the students with warmth and beauty to inspire and encourage creativity. We've embraced the past while accommodating today's students and their lifestyles."
These themes are reflected in paint selections chosen for their warmth and welcoming feel, warm LED lighting in the living areas shifting to brighter, creative lighting in learning spaces, and finishes that will stand the test of time. Throughout the project, low-VOC paints and petroleum-free furnishings were utilized to eliminate off-gassing as we prioritize our students' health.
Here's what you can expect when you step on campus this fall:
The Big Room now features bright hallways, new floors, and fresh paint. Cooper-Farris, Rand, Chambliss, and Davis dormitories received fresh paint, new floors, renovated bathrooms, and new furniture.
Barton Gym received substantial updates, including a new roof, refinishing of the basketball court, new flooring on the upper deck and locker rooms, fresh paint throughout, and an updated entry.
Thanks to our diligent maintenance crew, trees and shrubs lost in the hard winter freeze have been removed, and new landscaping will be installed in the fall and spring. The new landscape design will create a cohesive look across our campus. In addition to these updates, several athletics facilities will also receive updates in the coming months.
The Byrd Family Courtyard
Thanks to the generous donation from the Byrd Family, a new turf space was installed in the Quad between the Dorothy Elkins Student Center and Haynes-Meadows Dormitory. The new turf provides students with year-round enjoyment of this outdoor space. Student input will be gathered on ways to enhance this space further.
Our hard-working teams are finishing these updates and preparing the campus for students’ arrival in mid-August. We cannot wait to welcome you back to campus!
Stay tuned for more updates including photographs from around campus coming soon.
