Dave Trout

The Webb School community is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of its most generous and devoted alumni, Ernest Vane McClurg, Class of 1960, who died on April 21, 2025, at the age of 83.

Mr. McClurg’s enduring legacy is woven into the fabric of Webb’s campus and culture. A steadfast supporter of the school, his extraordinary generosity is most visibly recognized in McClurg Hall, Webb’s state-of-the-art science facility that bears his name. In 2011, he was honored with induction into Webb’s Distinguished Alumni Society in recognition of his professional achievements, his integrity, and his lifetime of service to others.

Born in Lakeland, Florida, on November 4, 1941, Mr. McClurg graduated from The Webb School in 1960 before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University and a Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law. He returned to Lakeland to serve in his family's banking and legal enterprises and went on to lead a successful legal career, ultimately serving as Chairman of the Board of Peoples Bank of Lakeland and practicing law until his retirement in 2008.

A devoted community leader, Mr. McClurg held long-term leadership roles with All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Florida Southern College, and numerous civic organizations including the Boys’ Club of Lakeland, United Way, and the Lakeland Rotary Club. He was known throughout Central Florida for his humility, generosity, and quiet strength.

“Vane McClurg embodied the values that The Webb School holds dear—honor, integrity, and a commitment to a life of purpose,” said Ken Cheeseman, Head of School. “He believed in the power of education to transform lives and gave selflessly to ensure that Webb students, present and future, would have the opportunities and resources they need to thrive. McClurg Hall is a daily reminder to our students of the impact one life can make. We are forever grateful for his vision and love for this school.”

Mr. McClurg is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Virginia, and their three children: Adele McClurg Morgan, Hayden McClurg ’88, and Margaret McClurg Stedman and her husband, John. He is also remembered lovingly by his grandchildren: Challen Morgan, Clay Stedman, Vane Stedman, Barton Stedman, and Decker Stedman.

The Webb School extends its deepest condolences to the McClurg family and all those whose lives were touched by this remarkable man.
