Continuing a valued tradition that dates back to The Webb School’s founder, Sawney Webb, Middle and Upper School faculty, staff and students in grades six through 12 began several days of signing Honor and Premise Books on Aug. 20, 2025, in the Follin Chapel.
A means of ensuring the highest standard of personal integrity at Webb, the Honor Pledge signing ceremony signifies the community’s vow not to lie, cheat or steal. Students also pledge to be in the right place at the right time. At the opening ceremony, faculty advisor to the Honor Council, Buck Smith, discussed the importance of the Honor Code, providing real-life examples of honest work and its impact on ourselves and others. In addition, Director of Technology Raymond Pryor offered a brief lesson on the origins of our School’s motto, “Noli res subdole facere,” which translates to “Do nothing on the sly.”
Webb’s 2025-26 senior Honor Council members, Austin Bilbro (President), Grayson Anderson (Vice President), Trynna Atwood (Secretary) and Charlotte Toy (Sergeant-At-Arms) were the first to sign each book. Elected by their peers in recognition of their honesty, integrity and moral values, these students are part of Webb’s oldest campus organization dating back to 1914. They are responsible for upholding the Honor Code through personal example and for educating the student body in the finer points of honorable behavior. The Honor Council also investigates violations of the Honor Code and recommends penalties for offenders to the head of school.
Throughout the academic year, all students will be expected to reaffirm their Honor Pledge on their tests, quizzes and projects by writing and signing the statement below:
"I pledge my word of honor as a Webb lady/gentleman/citizen that I have neither given nor received any help on this assignment."
