Students take advantage of annual Diversity Day to learn about classmates’ cultures

Students discover many things about the diverse cultures of their classmates, but they also find commonalities they never knew they had during Diversity Day at The Webb School. Webb’s enrollment includes students from 12 foreign countries. The annual event, usually scheduled in spring, is slated for Oct. 17 this year.
“After surveying students we decided to celebrate Diversity Day early in the year,” said Hannah Little, Webb librarian and Diversity Day coordinator. “Students wanted to get to know their classmates and to learn about their cultures in the beginning. Many times great friendships are formed on Diversity Day, and then we just have one month of school left to enjoy those new relationships.”
An international lunch in the dining hall will kick off the activities this year. Students prepare favorite recipes from their native countries to share with fellow students, faculty and staff. The menu is as varied as Southern fried chicken, sushi and kimchi.
Also as part of the event, cultural displays from China, South Korea, Jamaica, Bahamas and Turkey, among others, are planned. Club booths, indoor and outdoor games, crafts and other activities also will entertain students during the afternoon. Green Feet will host an art contest. A foreign film festival and talent and fashion shows will complete the day.
Other foreign countries represented at Webb are Mexico, Japan, Russia, Nigeria, Taiwan, Senegal and Ethiopia.
