Student fare well in language international competitions

STUDENTS SCORE WELL ON NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM; ILLARDE 7TH IN STATE
Several world language students from The Webb School attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2012 National Spanish Examinations. The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12 and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
Webb students, taught by Spanish teachers, Kristen Linton, Anelly Arana and Monica Frazier, earned a total of one gold, two silver and five bronze medals along with 19 honorable mentions. Chelsea Ilarde, a 7th grader, earned 7th place in the State of Tennessee.
“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 143,641 students participating in 2012.”
National awards are determined by the total percentile as follows: Gold - 95th percentile and above; Silver - 85th through 94th percentile; Bronze - 75th through 84th percentile; and Honorable Mention - 50th through 74th percentile.

WEBB STUDENTS OF FRENCH CLAIM AWARDS, SEVERAL PLACE NATIONALLY
Webb students recently participated in The National French Contest/Le Grand Concours, an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.
Students of French in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a written test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes. Grades 1-6 participate in the Foreign Language in the Elementary School Contest. Grades 7-12 participate in the Secondary Contest. There are some 11,000 national winners out of the nearly 100,000 who participate in the contest. There are either 60 or 70 questions depending on the level of the test, in a range from something for elementary students to level 5 in the high school.
Following is a listing of winners, except for the seniors, who will receive their awards at graduation.

CARTER IS SUMMA CUM LAUDE WINNER IN NATIONAL LATIN EXAM
Webb students recently took the National Latin Exam, with Sallie Carter as a Summa Cum Laude Winner. The National Latin Exam is offered under the joint sponsorship of' the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. More than 149,000 Latin students from all 50 states participated this year, as did students from 13 foreign countries, including Australia, Mexico, Belgium, Canada, China Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Switzerland, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe. This year for the first time, students from Bulgaria and Mozambique also took the NLE.
