The Cornerstone Society
The history of Webb School shows us one thing very clearly
- leadership matters. The School has been enormously blessed
by the quality of its headmasters. As we launch the most ambitious
annual giving campaign in Webb's history, it is clear that
once again leadership matters.
Acknowledging the essential nature of strong leadership,
Webb School established the Cornerstone Society in 2002 to
recognize those who have the ability and willingness to make
an unrestricted major gift annually. Leadership and commitment
make up the cornerstone to all thriving, successful institutions.
In response to the great tradition of leadership that founded
Webb School, it is our hope to bring together those supporters
whose commitments will ensure that we are able to provide
financial for the best and brightest; pay competitive salaries
for our faculty; and offer academic and extracurricular programs
that are the hallmark of a Webb education. Your membership
in the Cornerstone Society will make a direct impact on the
lives of Webb School students and faculty. Please join this
special group of Webb supporters today.
Sawney
Webb Fellow
Gifts of $10,000 and above
William R. Webb, affectionately known as "Old Sawney"
founded the School in 1870 with a conviction to provide a
sound education and character training to young men and women.
His words comprise the mission statement of Webb School today,
"
to turn out young people who are tireless workers
and who know how to work effectively; who are accurate scholars,
who know the finer points of morals and practice them in their
daily living; who are always courteous." The imprint
of his leadership is still alive on campus as Webb continues
to teach young people to strive for academic excellence with
honor.
John
M. Webb Fellow
Gifts of $5,000-$9,999
Old Sawney's younger brother was sometimes referred to as
"Gentle John" because of his more subtle classroom
teaching. However, in his own quiet style his commitment to
scholarship and the ideal of perfection in his classes was
unwavering. As co-principal with Old Sawney, John Webb laid
the foundation for the School, which endures today.
Son
Will Webb Fellow
Gifts of $2,500-$4,999
William R. Webb, Jr. was the firstborn of Sawney and Emma
Webb and became known as "Son Will." He joined his
father at Webb in 1908 and assumed the leadership of the School
in 1926. Son Will led Webb through some difficult economic
times and during World War II, remaining true to the School's
mission and ensuring its continuation.
G.
Webb Follin Fellow
Gifts of $1,500-$2,499
Gerald Webb Follin was a member of the Class of 1908. He
began teaching English at Webb in 1914 and under his tutelage,
many students learned both writing and great lessons in discipline.
He served as assistant principal for 32 years and principal
for 7 years. Webb Follin had a special understanding of "his
boys" and was able to instill within them courage, hope,
compassion and understanding. He truly devoted his life to
learning at Webb School.
A. Jon Frere Fellow
Gifts of $1,000-$1,499
To honor his sixteen years of leadership of
Webb School, we added the A. Jon Frere Fellow to the Cornerstone
Society. These sixteen years are longer than any other Webb
headmaster, except for Sawney Webb and William Webb. During
this tenure, the endowment increased from $8 to $17 million,
the campus was improved through numerous capital projects,
and the School excelled academically. He also added a required
Ethics course. Most importantly, Webb School remains vibrant
and strong.
